It seems like so many of my major life decisions happen around Christmas time. Maybe it's the spirit of the season or the cookies or the eggnog.
Every year, I get together with my girlfriends for our favorite things gift exchange. We've done it for years. Oprah inspired us. We give each other small things like cozy socks, lipsticks, or lotions. And we drink a lot of wine. It truly is one of my favorite days.
As an amateur potter, I always made homemade gifts for my friends. One year it was ceramic magnets, the next it was cookies on a homemade cookie plate, then it was spices and a dish for dipping. They were always so thankful and it gave my hobby a purpose.
In 2019, I hosted our Favorite Things party. It was the perfect time to give my friends their latest gift (a jewelry plate and bracelet) and get rid of some of my "pottery crap".
This loving term is something I give to my creations that... well, suck. They are mugs that are too small, cracked plates, strange creations that I attempted that turned out terribly wrong. I figured I could put a pile out and see if anyone wanted them before I tossed them.
The weird thing? They WANTED the crap. They actually wanted it. My friends looked at each piece and packed their purses full of it. I was completely shocked and my heart was full. It turned out my friends actually thought I was good at this.
This is my current shelf of pottery crap. Looks like I need to have my friends over soon.
I have never told them how great they made me feel that day. I have never told them that they inspired me to open my own Etsy shop.
They know now. When you have friends who truly believe in you, don't let them go.
This is our annual Favorite Things Christmas photo from 2019.
